Educational Influences and Employment

2002-present
Ongoing writing of visual art-related articles for various publications and journals, including Glasstire (Texas Art Review Online), Voices of Art Magazine, and the Austin Chronicle. Writing schedule became reduced in 2005 with a strengthened focus on art production.

2004-present
Regular volunteer work at Recording for the Blind contributed to a development of interest in Braille as an iconographic system.

2002-present
Regular yoga practice contributed to development of concepts and iconographic language.

1991-1997
Employed at Mexic-Arte Museum in various capacities, with primary responsibilities including Development and Communications. Curated several exhibits, produced voluminous numbers of publications, and organized numerous events and activities.

1993-1995
Attended several two-week long Maya Meetings seminars at the University of Texas to study epigraphy, Mesoamerican archaeology, and Mayan glyphs. Although glyph comprehension remains extremely limited at best, this was influential in terms of developing ideas for visual communication, and at better understanding and writing about the work of contemporary artists who use this as a focus.

Graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing

1984 - 88
Began studies at the University of North Texas; studied under Henry Whiddon, Vincent Falsetta, Susan Harrington, Rob Erdle, Harlan Butt, and Claudia Betti; was significantly influenced by the work and concepts of Vernon Fisher, then an instructor at the University of North Texas, and by the ideas of philosophy of aesthetics professor Dr. John Kimmey. Received a thorough background in design and classical drawing technique, and studied Primitive, American, European, African, Asian and Mesoamerican Art History.

Studied masterworks of classical and contemporary art in Italy, France, and England through Texas Christian University
